Our 2nd Annual May Day Bike-O-Rama at the Poetry Post, again co-sponsored by NWONA and the Sustainability Committee at SPSCC. We had a dozen riders who used the Decatur Bike Path in the morning and more throughout the day. Many new bike theme poems were added. And a proposal to have a May Pole next year~! SWONA leadership used a Thurston County Health Department grant in 2008 to create four destination "spots" to encourage neighbors to walk for health, for love of the neighborhood, and for building community. The "Welcome Park" is our #1 Spot anchoring the Walking Park. Follow the photos to WPS #2, the Poetry Post...make your way next to WPS #3 Caton Garden, and choose an interesting route thru the neighborhood to WPS #4 the Rainier View Spot. Then walk the walk! [

Transforming the corner of 9th & Fern was the first step in the "Walking Park" people from our SW neighborhood created in 2008 with a grant from Thurston County. As we scheduled work days around everyone's availability, nearby neighbors -- old and young -- helped protect the site and keep it clean. Over the months from the first workparty on May 10 to our planting date October 10, our presence attracted all kinds of help and support.

On May 1, 2008, SWONA and NWONA along with the SPSCC bicycle club collaborated on a "bike station" to encourage use of the Decatur Bikeway that leads out of the SW Neighborhood to the Courthouse Hill, SPSCC and Auto Mall Way. About 40 riders stopped by for water, bagels, coffee or cookies (baked by your neighbors!), on their morning and afternoon commutes. We hope more and more people will find this sustainable, beautiful route to work and play.
